Chapter 28

Michael got a second chance from George.

I used to not believe very strongly in second chances. If someone messed up once badly enough, it made it difficult for me to trust them in the future. Experience in education has certainly changed my perspective (not to mention all the second chances others have given me over the years).

What's the best second chance you ever got from somebody?

  1. When I was in 9th grade I quit football after my first week of practice. The conditioning was intense, the coaches were very intimidating, and there was talk that the freshman team was going to have to join the JV team (at that time, our program had 3 football teams: freshman, JV, and Varsity). The sophomores were ragging on us freshman telling us we weren't going to get to play that much, and we shouldn't even be trying out, etc.... I let those words intimidate me and quit. I decided all the hard work wasn't worth it if I didn't get to play. However, a few days after quitting I realized I made the wrong decision. Regardless of the amount of playing time, I still loved the sport, and I still wanted to be apart of the team. So, I asked my coach if I could have a second chance and he said absolutely. Obviously, I had to stay after practice and do extra conditioning as a punishment, but it was worth it. The lucky part is that the freshman team didn't have to join the JV team. We only had 13 guys, but the coach decided we were strong enough to stay as one team. We practiced hard and we fought harder; "Small but scrappy" was our team motto. The team chemistry was amazing; we all worked together so well...we didn't have any other choice with only 13 guys. Every victory was more rewarding than words can express. It's the one team I will never forget being apart of. I played 3 sports a year all 4 years of high school, and it's the only team I was on that ever had a winning record! (Sad, but true). My coach allowing me to come back is the best second chance I've ever received. Most of my favorite sports memories come from that season.
